MUSIC THEORY LESSONS

An understanding of the theory of music helps students who are learning an instrument to better interpret the music they are playing. Andrew Littlewood is an enthusiastic teacher of music theory, and is adept at making it fun for younger pupils to learn. Older students and adults often enjoy discovering how music “works” and seeing its secrets revealed.

Andrew incorporates elements of music theory into his own students’ flute lessons. He also gives separate music theory lessons up to and including Grade 5 to those who either want to learn about the theory of music for their own satisfaction, or who are taking exams in music theory.

MUSIC THEORY EXAMINATIONS

Andrew teaches theory in line with most music examining bodies such as the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Trinity College London and the London College of Music.

The ABRSM believes that music theory is so important that students taking ABRSM instrumental or singing exams need to have passed Grade 5 Music Theory before they can progress to taking Grade 6 on their instrument.

There is a wide selection of music theory books to suit different ages and stages, together with worksheets and past examination papers. Andrew is familiar with the resources available for each type of exam and will recommend the most appropriate resources for each individual student.
